About Us
Our program consists of traditional music of the shtetl, Israel, and Yiddish favorites, and music of the Yiddish and Broadway theaters.

Our Story
We are a band of eight passionate musicians based in Westchester County, NY, who are delighted to bring the songs and sounds of Klezmer with a twist to a broad audience.
Klezmer music or Jewish Jazz has expanded far from its roots, embracing melodies and rhythms of Ukrainian, Romanian, and Balkan tunes, among many other influences.
For 500 years, these traveling Jewish musicians performed in towns and villages for weddings, celebrations, and holiday parties in Christian and Jewish communities, in the public square and at private homes.
Meet The Band

Jay "Meshuganah" Elliot
Accordion and Vocals
Jay has been a professional musician since the age of 13. He spent more than 10 years in the Catskill Mountain Resorts during their heyday specializing in what they referred to at the time as “ Jewish Music” and playing standup bass in the hotel big bands. In the 1960’s Jay played the big bass for USO tours overseas in Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Scandinavia, Jazz clubs in Kansas City and Afro Jazz in the Midwest while getting his degrees in Acting and Directing at college. In the late 70’s Jay formed the wedding/events band Tuckahoe Road, back in New York, playing over 1500 affairs from 1977-19. In the early 2000s Jay joined the Rock and Roll band SR2 as their electric bass player. He continues to play with Sr2. In 2024 Jay formed the “Other Brothers” folk Trio.
In 2023 Jay began “Elijah And The Not For Prophets” Klezmorim with David Kaye. Their commitment was to the music of their Jewish Heritage. This was the impetus for their desire to bring this music to the public forum. It was easy to find wonderful musicians who wanted to join and travel on this journey.
Jay is also involved in teaching Theater courses in High Schools, Musical Therapy at Senior Citizens assisted living facilities and Nursing homes in the Westchester NY

David "Vindele" Kaye
Clarinet
David was a founding member of Elijah and the Not For Prophets along with Jay Elliott
A lifelong musician, David has dedicated himself to the joy and expression of music across a wide range of styles and settings. From an early age, he immersed himself in playing and performing, developing a deep passion that has remained central throughout his life.
Currently, he expresses his musical versatility as a member of “Elijah and the Not for Prophets”, a Klezmer band, a classic rock group “SR2”, the “Lehman College and Community Concert Band”, and a band at his former firm, Davis Polk where he worked for 38 years before he retired.
Whether performing klezmer clarinet melodies, sax or keyboard rock and roll or playing classical music in a concert, David brings deep love of music to every performance.

Teddy "Tuvyah" Kesler
Violin
Ted started with the Suzuki method at age 5. Three times he played at Carnegie Hall with Suzuki method students. Ted played in NYC subways, parks, and local bars to earn money during college. For several years after college, Ted managed a music coffeehouse that featured some of the finest singer-songwriters in the New York Metropolitan area.
Ted also plays violin in the Excelsior Symphony Orchestra, a Westchester County-based orchestra that balances professional and amateur musicians of all ages.
When Ted is not fiddling around, he is Chairperson of the Elementary and Early Childhood Education Department in the School of Education at Queens College. You can find out more about his teaching work at www.tedsclassroom.com.

Tamar "Leibela" Prager
Vocals and Percussion
Tamar lives in Westchester County, New York with her wife and two sons. Performing has been a longstanding element of Tamar's life, as a cellist in her childhood through young adulthood, and later as a percussionist and singer.
She is one of the founding Members of “Elijah and the Not For Prophets”. Singing with “Elijah” has allowed her to enhance her love of “Jewish” music, and she is grateful for the opportunity to develop as a singer and grow into new roles and genres.
In 2020 Tamar found a great public need for a solution to the problem of overabundance and founded a highly successful Downsizing Consulting Business after years of working in public health and clinical nursing.

Sandy "Bialystock" Shine

Son of Detroit, Grandson of Bialystock, Przasnysz, Lachve, and Borispol. Keys at 7, Frets at 15. Mathematician in the head, Lawyer in the eyeballs, Musicantor in the heart.

Barry "Shtikele" Presser
Drums and Vocals
Barry has over 40 years of experience as a professional drummer and vocalist and has been a member of Elijah and the Not For Prophets since its inception.
Barry has performed with a wide variety of bands in an array of genres: rock, blues, rhythm and blues, jazz, big bands, pop, international, country, and marching band music for parades and religious processions
Barry founded his synagogue’s house band over thirty years ago. Originally named the “Moody Jews”, and now known as “Proof”, the band focuses on classic rock and blues, but also includes the occasional freylekh. The congregation also counts on Barry to accompany their annual Purimspiel and other musical events. He is currently the drummer with the rock band SR2 “Simply Rock and Roll”
Barry teaches a course in hand drumming for Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES, and offers private drum instruction for all ages and abilities, including special needs students and adults.

Josh "Mishpocha" Mandel
Tuba
Josh has been a professional musician for over 30 years. He joined “Elijah and the Not For Prophets” in early 2024. The group never had a tuba player fill the bass role before, but it ended up being a great match as it added a new color to the music that continues to contribute to the group’s unique sound.
Josh is an active Westchester musician playing with a number of concert bands, a symphony orchestra as well as a variety of chamber ensembles. He also enjoys teaching young low brass musicians to see to it that another generation of young players can continue on the tradition of music making in whatever style appeals to them (and hopefully some Klezmer included!) When not performing he enjoys, in his mother’s words, “pashkeying in the kitchen” usually making deserts of some kind to share and enjoy with friends and family.

Ed “Abu Rav Shoshi” Rosenbaum
Clarinet
